Our story
What started as a hobby in 2016—born from curiosity (and concern) about what we put on our skin—quickly grew into something more. After learning traditional bath and body products were full of harsh chemicals and plastic packaging, founder Sherrie Brown started making her own. Guided by the memory of her grandmother’s soapmaking and a passion for all things intentional and handmade, she launched her first retail space in Staunton, VA: Essentially Zen Shop.
With the support of her husband Robert, the business blossomed into a full-fledged self-care experience. In 2023, they brought that same heart and mission to Charlottesville, rebranding the second location as Ovid & Lane—a name that honors the grandparents who inspired them both: Ovid, Robert’s grandfather, and Lane, Sherrie’s grandmother’s maiden name.
Our ZenBox Gifting Experience
We specialize in personalized gifting—and by that, we don’t mean tossing a tag on a pre-made box. Our signature ZenBoxes are curated with care: you select your favorite products, and we’ll wrap it all up with a hand-tied dried floral forever bouquet, fabric ribbon in your chosen color, and eco-conscious packaging.
